This is from the last pages of the Quanata, the oldest document on Majito Island.
The poem of love and the story that follows it, speaks of daring, magic, adventure, and romance.
It teaches of a spirit that can’t keep two souls from one another and of a pull so strong it can make a fish breathe out of water.
Every boy, at least on Land Majito, the part of the island that sits above water—has a special talent.
With these Talents we must persuade some member of Sea Majito out of the water to marry us.
My Talent—assigned before I was born and evident in me since I was five—is baking.
I just saw Meliz. She’d been in the sea and smelled like sweet seaweed and crystal salt, beautiful as ever.
She wasn’t there just to dazzle me, however. She wanted to talk to me in secret about a potion that will let me breathe underwater for three days.
She said that three days would be more than enough time to stand in protest at the bottom of the sea. She said that’s how we’ll protest the Fishing Game.
When I’m at the end of the pier I’m instantly struck by the sight of wavy, bright red hair hanging just above delicate, lightly-tanned shoulders.
I haven’t even seen her face yet, and I know that she must be beautiful, her toast-colored shoulders covered in darker, golden freckles.
Without watching my step, I move just a little bit closer…and then I trip.
Our jaws drop in synchronization when we see one another. She’s gorgeous.
